Things to do in Bayonne
These are just a few of the more popular tourist attractions in Bayonne, along with a brief description:
♦ Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
One of the highlights of taking a cruise from Bayonne is that the cruise ship will usually sail past one of America's true symbols, the Statue of Liberty. To really bring your vacation up a notch, you can take a ferry from Liberty State Park (in New Jersey) or Battery Park (in New York) to Liberty Island for an up-close visit to the statute (before or after your cruise). Ellis Island, which was once America’s main immigration station from 1892 to 1954, is also located in this area. Over 40 percent of Americans can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island, making it an appealing stop.
♦ Times Square
When you take a cruise from Bayonne, you have the opportunity to visit Times Square, one of New York City’s main attractions. Located in midtown Manhattan this area is filled with huge advertisements (such as the famous, steaming Cup of Noodles), great restaurants, bars, street vendors, stores and hotels. Among the big names in Times Square are MTV, Virgin Megastores, Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood. Times Square is also the site of the world-famous ball drop that occurs each New Year's Eve in NYC.
♦ Fifth Avenue
While visiting New York City before or after your cruise, one of the definite shopping highlights is the section of Fifth Avenue between 34th and 59th Street. Lined with upscale shops, this section of Fifth Avenue is one of the world's premier shopping streets. Among the shopping venues on Fifth Avenue are Gucci, Harry Winston, Saks Fifth Avenue, FAO Schwartz, Louis Vutton, Prada, Fendi and Tiffany & Co. The majestic St. Patrick’s Cathedral is also in this area of NYC. Further uptown (around the 80s and 90s) on Fifth avenue are some wonderful museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. |
